Read the full cost and payment terms
For branded weight and diabetes medicines, a cash price, an insurance payment and a published list price are different figures.
The amount depends on the payment route and the product.
Ask for a written total with visits, medicine, any tests and recurring fees shown apart. Then ask which of those costs are included in the advertised amount.
A headline price can change after the start
The first two monthly fills of semaglutide (Ozempic) pens were listed at $199 apiece on the government's price page as of September 26, 2026.
The offer was for new cash-paying adult US residents receiving the lower strengths.
The amount of medicine in a product is its strength.
For later monthly fills, the prescribed strength determined whether the price was $349 or $499.
The published introductory terms cover fills through December 31, 2026.
This example shows why the terms matter. Ask for the cost of your exact product and the amount after any starting offer.
Paying cash means paying outside insurance. Ask whether a headline number is a cash offer, a price with insurance or only the medicine part of a plan.
Medicare's temporary program is a separate route
Medicines used solely to lose weight remained outside Medicare's usual drug benefit, Part D, as of September 2026.
From July 2026 through December 2027, eligible people can obtain certain weight medicines through a temporary Medicare program for $50 a month.
Eligibility depends on the person's plan, weight and other health conditions, with a prescription and approval required.
Part D's annual limit on your drug spending does not include the $50 you pay each month through this program.
Ask your plan and the person prescribing the medicine which route applies to your situation. Do not assume a weight-loss offer is ordinary insurance coverage.
Before agreeing to a recurring bill
- What is the total after the starting offer?
- Does this include medicine, tests and follow-up visits?
- What charge applies when I leave the visit without a prescription?
- Is payment monthly or paid in advance?
- How do I cancel, and what can be refunded?
For insurance, check coverage for that particular medicine and the health problem it would treat. Find out whether the plan requires approval before paying.
Write down the answer in dollars and in dates. A phrase such as starting at leaves part of the bill open.
